(WWLP) - Two proposals are being considered on Beacon Hill that would protect people from what some lawmakers are calling "dangerous dogs."
State Senator Stephen Buoniconti is proposing the creation of a
"Dangerous Dog Registry."
It would list a description, location, and photo of every dog
in the state that has violated the law.
It would be operated by the Department of Public Safety and
would be run like the sexual offender registry.
Senator Buoniconti told 22News that he thinks Massachusetts needs a unified state system so people can find out if one of these dogs is in their neighborhood.
Worcester Representative Vincent Pedone is proposing another bill that is especially controversial. He would like to give cities and towns the ability to ban specific breeds of dogs all together.
Candy Lash of the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society told
22News, "It's unfair to ban any particular breed of dog."
Dean Smith of Munson agrees with her, saying, "I've seen
Doberman Pinschers that are more people friendly and a bigger baby
than the Labrador Retrievers I've had."
