HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - On Thursday at around 2:00pm, 24 year old 8th grade teacher Lisa Lavoie would normally be getting ready to dismiss class for the day at the Maurice Donahue Elementary School. Instead, she's facing charges of child enticement.
Local moms are left to wonder how on earth this happened.
"There's probably some things that people could have caught or people could have noticed, or maybe there was some inappropriate interactions or, maybe there could have been even some talk amongst the kid," said Renne Menard, a mother of two.
Not everyone agrees the signs would have been obvious to students or administrators, saying the blame falls solely on the teacher.
"It could have been prevented if she would have backed off and chose the right path stand up," said Carmen Burgos of Holyoke.
Superintendent Eduardo Carballo tells 22News, each teacher is cori background checked, trained about sexual harassment, and asked to sign a code of conduct, but he says sometimes there are still people who choose to step out of line.
Carballo says so far the investigation has revealed that Lavoie and the student never engaged in inappropriate behavior on school grounds, and mainly communicated after school hours talking and texting by cell.
The superintendent even said the teacher worked with a team of educators every day, and none of them noticed any indication of the alleged affair.
"All students get crushes on teachers, but the teacher being an adult she should know when to back off and be professional in what she does," said Jeanette Cabassa, a mother of three from Holyoke.
Lisa Lavoie will be arraigned on child enticement charges at Holyoke District Court on Friday.
