SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A pack of coyotes attacked a deer inside Forest Park in
Springfield and now city officials are warning homeowners to
be extra cautious.
The Department of Parks and Recreation is working with the
Deptartment of Fisheries and Wildlife to identify the den and warn
the public.
The news had some Forest Park residents feeling nervous.
“I have two cats. They are mostly indoors, but they do
go out on occasion,” Jackie Parrish said. “I would fear
for them and I don't think they'll be going out at all after
dark.”
Candy Lash with the Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society said
packs of coyotes are confirmed to live in all Massachusetts
counties -- including Hampden County.
22News is working for you with tips on how to keep your kids
and your pets safe.
City officials suggest keeping small dogs on leashes, keeping
cats inside whenever possible, and to paying close attention to
young children, especially after dark.
They also suggest you feed your pets indoors and store
garbage cans inside until trash day.
Lash said most coyotes prefer to flee than fight with humans
or pets, and coyotes are not typically associated with rabies. She
said if you do encounter a coyote out on your daily walk, making
alot of noise should scare it off.
