ENFIELD, Conn. (WWLP) - Every year police respond to countless calls about illegal fireworks.

Here in Massachusetts all fireworks are banned unless set off by a professional.

West Springfield Police Captain John Ferrarini told 22News illegal posession of fireworks is a misdemeanor that could cost you between $100 and $1,000 and land you in jail for up to 2 1/2 years.

Capt. Ferrarini told 22News if someone is injured by a stray firework, the person caught setting off the fireworks could be charged with assault, assault and battery, or even assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Over the state line in Connecticut, non-aerial type fireworks are legal. But keep in mind, transporting any of these fireworks back to Massachusetts is still illegal.
