Boston's Franklin Park Zoo might have to close its doors since the state cut its funding. Are local zoos staying afloat?
The Forest Park Zoo in Springfield and the Lupa Zoo in Ludlow are not just surviving, they are thriving.
Scott Foster, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Forest Park Zoo, told 22News they haven't been affected by state budget cuts because they do no rely on state money for the daily operations of the park.
Joan Lupa, the Treasurer of the Lupa Zoo, said their park has been able to be successful during the recession by keepoing prices low for families.
She adds only one member of the Lupa family takes salary from the park. All others donate their time.
Lupa Zoo also depends on help from volunteers.
The Franklin Park Zoo said if they were to close, some of their animals might have to be euthanized. Gov. Deval Patrick has said that the state would not allow any of the animals to be killed.
