SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Good news for animal lovers in western Massachusetts.
Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society has announced the
purchase of the building at 171 Union Street in Springfield from
the MSPCA for $1.2 million.
The move will enable Dakin to expand its successful animal
adoption and outreach programs from Hampshire and Franklin counties
to Hampden County in the upcoming months.
They will close their facility in Greenfield, but will maintain
operations at their Leverett shelter.
They hope to open the new center August 1.
The MSPCA was forced to shut down its adoption center at the
end of March due to the loss of nearly $11.5 million from its
endowment.
The MSPCA also announced that the shelter on Martha's Vineyard,
which was scheduled to close on Friday, will also be leased at no
cost to the Animal Shelter of Martha's Vineyard, a
government/private cooperation.
