LUDLOW, Mass. (WWLP) - Ludlow Police is stepping up patrols downtown and in neighboring residential areas.

Lt. Paul Madera told 22News, the number of car break-ins in recent months has doubled compared to the same time last year.

"They're going in and removing change, computers, GPS systems, phones, wallets, purses," he said.

He added that the thieves usually strike late at night and target unlocked vehicles.

In Chicopee, police say more than a dozen houses were broken into in broad daylight just last month.

"I think it's very brazen. It just makes me extra cautious I guess," said Chicopee resident Patricia Remillard.

Chicopee Police Captain William Jebb told 22News, the Aldenville, Fairview and Willimansett neighborhoods were hardest hit. He believes the burglaries are connected.

The thief strikes when nobody's home, steals anything he can carry and takes off by foot or bike. In response, Chicopee Police are monitoring those neighborhoods in uniform and undercover.

Chicopee Police have an idea of what the robber looks like and are now looking for him.
