SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Residents may be surprised to find everyday items are costing them a little more after the state raises its sales tax.

Governor Deval Patrick has promised to sign the tax increase, from five to six and a quarter percent on Monday.

Many residents say they shouldn't have to shell out more money to the state during tough times, while others say they understand how much the state budget is hurting.

Brian Didlund of East Longmeadow says, "I think we're being taxed way to much in this state and I think there's other ways of doing it."

"If we need it, if we truly need it, then it should be done," maintains Martin Carrera of Northampton.

Residents will see other tax increases if the budget passes, including taxes on alcohol and an increase to the meals tax.
