SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - An 18-year-old woman is dead, becoming the third Springfield
murder victim in just four days.
Springfield Police Sargent John Delaney confirmed to 22News
that the 18-year old shooting victim was taken off life support and
died at around 5pm Sunday at Baystate Medical Center.
The victim was shot multiple times, including once in the
head, through the window of a multi-family home in Springfield's.
The shooting happened on Wilmont Street in Springfield just after
1:30am Sunday.
The suspect, 26-year old Daniel Horne, who lives just two
doors away, was arrested and faces several charges including armed
assault with intent to murder.
According to Springfield Police Lt. Tom Kennedy a neighborhood fight over a television set, set off a string of events.
Springfield Fire Department Spokesperson Dennis Ledger told 22News someone threw a Molotov firebomb at Horne's house, just hours after the shooting. Several officers were inside at the time, collecting evidence.
Sgt. Delaney told 22News it was in retaliation to the shooting. Another police sergeant was able to put out the fire before it caused any major damage.
Sgt. Delaney says investigators were able to track down the .22 caliber rifle used in the shooting.
No one has been arrested for the firebombing incident.
This latest murder is the third homicide in just four days.
On Thursday night 23-year old Omar Gallegro was shot and killed in front of Christopher's Package Store on Main Street in Springfield. Police are calling this a drug-related shooting. This was the city's 15th murder of the year.
On Saturday Springfield recorded it's 16th murder when 24-year old Carmelo Adorno was killed after being shot 4 times, including once in the head. Adorno was in his car on Chapin Terrace in Springfield. Police are still investigating the shooting.
