WESTSPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A water main break has closed a portion of Piper Road in West Springfield and that is expected to cause some traffic problems.

The 24-inch water main broke just before 4:00 a.m. on Friday, flooding the street with about 2 million gallons of water.

Jack Dowd, Director of the DPW in West Springfield, told 22News they were lucky the break happened just outside of the water department.

"This is a fairly good sized break. The location and the time of day really made it a lot easier to take care of, " Dowd said.

This is the fifth water main break in the past four months in western Massachusetts.

One driver told 22News he wanted to know where all of his tax dollars are going.

"We are in an area that has very high in taxes and there is a lot of money in Massachusetts. But where is it being spent? " Fred Hunter asked.

Police have closed Piper Road from Amostown Road to Smyrna Street.  It could remain closed all day.
