DEERFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Fire crews spent hours battling an estimated 50 acre brush fire
in Franklin County Friday. Firefighters from dozens of local
departments were called to the scene just west of Upper Road in
Deerfield. Deerfield Fire Chief Chester Yazwynski said they even
pulled in the task force from Templeton, near Worcester, for
backup.
Chief Yazwynski told 22News that the blaze was likely caused
by a passing train. The train sparked numerous fires in about
8-9 different locations along the track.
The fire spread throughout the area along the railroad tracks
creating a difficult situation for those battling the blaze. "We
were out there, and we were sweating. We were hauling stuff up the
mountain, so that was definitely the big thing was keeping us cool
and hydrated, because it was big, it was hot," said Cooper Magoon,
volunteer firefighter.
Chief Yazwynski told 22News that none of the homes in the
area were threatened because firefighters were able to get the
blaze under control in time. It took firefighters about 3 1/2 hours
to to put out the fire.
