CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - In Chicopee, veterans were honored during a ceremony at Doverbrook Estates.

Several veterans, Chicopee Mayor Michael Bissonnette, and Colonel Bob Swain, the Commander at Westover Air Force Reserve Base, all spoke at the event.

During the ceremony, the flag was at half staff and there was also a moment of silence for the victims of Fort Hood in Texas.

People attending the ceremony told 22News what Veterans Day meant to them.

“It's important to honor the veterans because they are dying every day in Iraq,”said Lisa Fleming.

“I think over time, we realize these men and women do alot for us and they deserve a lot more than what they've been getting,” said Mike Grunwalk, the Senior Instructor of the Chicopee High School Junior ROTC.
