NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - Northampton is struggling with what to do with their trash.
Mayor Mary Clare Higgins said she supported expanding the
Northampton landfill over the Barnes Aquifer, but on Tuesday night
56% of voters said they don't support that option.
This was a non binding advisory question. So even though most
voters said no, an expansion of the landfill could still happen.
But, Mayor Higgins said she is taking the public's message
into consideration and is looking at a few alternative options. "We
could close the landfill and have the garbage trucked out of state.
That could eventually cost double than what people are paying now
for their trash," she said.
