AMHERST, Mass. (WWLP) - A wild weekend in Amherst as local college students party before graduation.

Police were called in for a major disturbance near some dorms at Sunset Avenue and Fearing Street. Apparently 700 to 800 people gathered and it took 45 minutes for police to break up the crowd.

On Friday night, officers were called to a ruckus on the Town Fair on the Common. Amherst Police Lieutenant Ron Young says two girls, 15 and 13 years old were beating each other. Both were charged with disorderly conduct and assault and battery.

Amherst police responded to a total of 200 calls. Fifty people were arrested for noise violations, liquor violations and fighting in public.

Graduation at UMass starts May 23rd.
