HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - A Holyoke woman was shocked to find a WWII hand grenade.

Police immediately shut down Washington Avenue and called State Trooper Jeremy Cotton's bomb squad.

After some anxious moments, Holyoke Police Lt. Michael Higgins told 22NEWS the grenade turned out to be dud.

That was quite a relief for Christine Leary, who told 22News, "After when I really looked at it, I said, 'Gee, this really could be real.' I'm also in the Air Force Reserve. We're taught not to touch that stuff."

As for the vintage WWII hand grenade, the State Police bomb squad will get rid of it.

Holyoke Police Lt. Michael Higgins told 22NEWS Christine Leary is to be congratulated for the way she handled a potentially explosive situation.
