Mass. high court to hear test to tough gun law

BOSTON (AP) - A Boston man is challenging a decision to deny him a gun license based on his juvenile record.

Marko Chardin was 14 when one of his best friends was shot and killed while being robbed of a pair of sneakers. Chardin started carrying a gun and was arrested after the gun fell out of his pocket in front of a police officer.

When he went to apply for a gun license 15 years later, he was turned down. That's because state law automatically disqualifies certain people from ever getting a license, including someone with a firearms offense as a juvenile.

Chardin's lawyers are challenging the law before Massachusetts' highest court. Arguments are scheduled for Feb. 4.

Chardin is now 33 and works as an administrator at a charter school.
