BOSTON (AP) - State officials say the Fourth of July holiday ushers in the height of the summer driving season, so they have a few reminders for all travelers.

The Massachusetts Turnpike and other major highways are busiest on Friday and Sunday afternoons, so they suggest alternate travel times.

They say the last Friday in July and the first Friday in August were ranked number two and three for the heaviest traffic volume days last year.

Sundays in August also topped the busiest Sundays of the year.

Motorists are encouraged to join the free Fast Lane transponder program to save time on the Turnpike.

Residents are also encouraged to use public transportation, bicycling or walking to reduce travel time and save money.
