Audit finds improvement in juror office

BOSTON (AP) - A new audit of the Office of the Jury Commissioner has found some improvements but also some ongoing concerns in the agency that oversees the state's master juror list.

Massachusetts Auditor Suzanne Bump said that despite a 2008 audit that recommended the office use multiple sources like the Registry of Motor Vehicles and Department of Revenue to build the juror list, the office instead relied solely on state census information.

But Bump credited the office for making better use of jurors' time.

Bump said that after the 2008 audit, the office improved the way it assigns jurors.

Bump said the new audit found that from 2008 to 2010, 58,000 fewer would-be jurors appeared in court and the number of days that jurors appeared at a court without being assigned to a trial decreased.
