Bucket truck suspended 120 feet in air

CHELMSFORD, Mass. (WHDH) - Two people were rescued from a bucket truck that got stuck about 120 feet in the air.

Matthew West and Luke Fischer, two employees for Sprint, were about to perform upgrades to the system on the tower in Chelmsford, Massachusetts when the lift became stuck.

Brian West, one of the rescuers, helped get his younger brother, Matthew, and Fischer down from the bucket truck.

"We had guys trying to fix some problems on the Sprint wireless antennas. The lift malfunctioned. There's supposed to be safeties in place to take care of this and they malfunctioned, so we did a last resort and I, myself, went up and brought them a line and we did a rope rescue," said Brian West.

Brian West, with a rope, climbed to the top of the tower using the ladder on the side.

He repelled himself down to the edge of the tank where the two employees were stranded in the basket.

"I then deployed another rope on the end of my rope, pulled it up, tied them off on the second rope.

They each repelled down that second rope separately," said Brian West.

The workers got stuck up in the bucket around 12:30 p.m. and were rescued around 5 p.m.

"It was scary, it was definitely scary...I was more concerned about my fellow guy that was next to me," said Matthew West, who was rescued. "It was cold..."

"It was windy. It was raining at the end and the whole thing was shaking. I had already been out about four hours and was getting cold," said Luke Fisher, who was rescued.

No one was injured.

The lift will undergo inspections.
