Cambridge considering ban on large sodas

(WWLP) - New York's mayor has enforced a limit on how big of a soda a restaurant can serve you, and now one Massachusetts city may be following suit.

The city of Cambridge is talking about having restaurants limit the serving amount of soda and other sugary drinks 16-ounces per meal. The idea is to help stop the spread of obesity, but not everyone is convinced that such a limit would really be effective.

Residents in Springfield told 22News that they think city shouldn't put a ban on how much soda one can have.

“I feel that people should be able to buy, and there are different choices out there, let them decide what they want to do,” Eleanor Smith of Springfield said.

“I just feel that people should make  their own choices,” Lois McGovern of Springfield said. ”People are certainly educated enough what is good for them and what isn't.”

Diet soda would be the only soft drink exempt from this 16-ounce limit.
