DUDLEY, Mass. (AP) - Police say two friends playing a game of quick draw by seeing who could pull a gun or knife faster led to the accidental shooting of one man.

Daniel Grenon was released on personal recognizance after pleading not guilty Wednesday in Dudley District Court to charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, improper storage of ammunition and six counts of improperly storing a firearm.

Police say the 24-year-old Grenon of Webster, a security guard, accidentally shot 24-year-old Ryan Aldridge of Shrewsbury in the abdomen just before midnight on New Year's Eve.

Aldridge required surgery but survived.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that Grenon's lawyer says his client is "extremely upset" and thought the gun was unloaded.

Grenon was also ordered to surrender his guns.
