"Convoy for Kids" benefit held

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The engines are revving as trucks and motorcycles roll down First Avenue in Chicopee and get in line for the "Convoy for Kids" benefit, which raises money for the Ronald McDonald House of Springfield.

This is the 16th year the Basile family has organized the tractor and motorcycle ride to raise money for sick children and their families.

The money used to go towards Make a Wish, but the Basiles wanted to make sure the money they raised would stay right here in the Pioneer Valley, so the new tradition benefits the Ronald McDonald House of Springfield.

When children are sick and being treated at Springfield area medical facilities, the Ronald McDonald House is a welcome "home away from home" for kids and their families. Instead of sleeping in hospital waiting rooms, families can enjoy some privacy and comfort during a difficult time.

Today, truck drivers and bikers are donating money and time to keep Springfield's Ronald McDonald House running, and to brighten the day of a child staying there. 22 Ronald McDonald kids will get a ride in one of the trucks before enjoying a barbecue in Palmer.

Trucks and bikes are still lining up, and the convoy will take off at 11 this morning.
