ACUSHNET, Mass. (WPRI) - Acushnet police are investigating a case of animal cruelty.

A pit bull dog was found dead and stuffed in a bag near the Acushnet River on Thursday.

A witness told police they saw a man throw a bag that was in a stroller from the Slocum Street bridge. It landed on the river bank.

When police arrived, they discovered the 4-year-old female dog inside the bag. Police say the dog had bites all over its body and appeared to have been used in dog fights.

The suspect was last seen running into New Bedford from Slocum Street.

Anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts or the owner of this dog is urged to call the Acushnet Police Department.
