Mild earthquake shook WMass Tuesday night

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Western Massachusetts residents were among the thousands of people jolted by a  Magnitude 4.0 earthquake centered  in Maine Tuesday night.

According to the United States Geological Survey, at 7:12PM Tuesday, there was a 4.0 earthquake in Maine, and it was felt all across western Massachusetts.

The quake was centered about 4 miles from Hollis Center, Maine, and about 12 miles from both Biddeford and Saco.

22News received numerous e-mails and telephone calls from viewers saying they felt the quake.  No one reported any injuries or damage.

According to the Geological Survey website's intensity map, the shaking could be felt as far away as the south shore of Connecticut.

There are no immediate reports of damage.  One caller from Southwick said the medicine chest door opened and bottles of medication came flying out.  Easthampton's Pat Kusnierz lives at the bottom of Mountain Road.  She told 22News, "It felt like someone was trying to push the house!"  Kusnierz said there was no damage to her home.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick released this statement regarding Tuesday night's quake: "Many Massachusetts residents felt the effects of an earthquake tonight. According to MEMA, which is monitoring events and has briefed me, the quake was centered some 30 miles outside of Portland, Maine. So far, we have no reports of injury or damage in Massachusetts. MEMA will continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents should use caution if they encounter any damage and take a minute to check in on neighbors, family and friends," Governor Patrick said.

Tuesday night's quake is far less severe than the 2011 quake in northern Virginia that was felt in Massachusetts. That quake measured in at 5.8 on the Richter Scale.
