NORTON, Mass. (AP) - Police say a 66-year-old woman walking her two dogs after sunset has been shot and wounded by a hunter who claimed that he thought she was a deer.

Police say the woman was on a wooded path when she was shot at about 5 p.m. Saturday. She was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Authorities did not immediately release additional information on her condition Sunday.

Police say the hunter called 911 after realizing that his target was not a deer.

Authorities did not immediately release the names of the woman or the hunter, who are both Norton residents.

Norton, state and environmental police officers are still investigating the shooting.
