BOSTON (AP) - Gov. Deval Patrick has named an interim leader for the Massachusetts National Guard.
The appointment on Tuesday of Maj. Gen. L. Scott Rice as acting adjutant general follows Patrick's decision last week to suspend Maj. Gen. Joseph Carter indefinitely.
The U.S. Army is investigating an allegation that Carter raped a subordinate in Florida nearly 30 years ago. He has denied that allegation.
Rice currently commands Massachusetts Air National Guard and also serves as the Air National Guard's assistant to the commander of the U.S. Air Forces in Europe. There are approximately 8,500 soldiers and airmen in the Massachusetts National Guard.
