WAKEFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - An eastern Massachusetts man has been indicted on 100 counts of child rape and sexual abuse involving children as young as eight ‘days’ old.

49-year-old John Burbine was indicted by a grand jury on a variety of offenses including forcible rape, aggravated assault and possession of child pornography.

The alleged abuse involved more than a dozen children ranging from eight days to three-and-a-half years and occurred in the children' homes across the state.

Burbine gained access to the children by working as a babysitter for his wife, Marian Burbine, who allegedly ran an unlicensed day care.

According to the Middlesex County District Attorney, Gerald Leone, "I have never seen a case this bad. The nature, scope and extent of the abuse, the forcible rape, the neglect and the exploitation in this case is the worst I have ever seen."

Burbine is also accused of photographing and videotaping the children.

Leone said Burbine's wife was unaware of the alleged abuse. She is charged with reckless child endangerment and operating an unlicensed child care business.
