BOSTON (WWLP) - Thousands of people in Massachusetts may have extra money lying around, and not even know about it.

State Treasurer Steve Grossman’s office has identified $60 million in unclaimed property over the last six months.

Grossman says that one in ten people have unclaimed property. It can be in the form of forgotten savings and checking accounts, un-cashed checks, stocks and safety deposit boxes. The Commonwealth has more than $2 billion in unclaimed property held in trust until their rightful owners can be found.

Grossman says even some well-known people have discovered that they had unclaimed property.

“Past people with claims include Governor Deval Patrick, Tom Brady, Steven Tyler, Senator Scott Brown, and Chelsea Clinton,” Grossman said.
