BOSTON (WWLP) - State Treasurer Steven Grossman is urging congress to support legislation to allow states to implement uniform internet sales tax laws.

Grossman says if the 6.25 percent sales tax were collected on online purchases, it could contribute up to $340 million to the state.

Online retailers only have to charge a consumer sales tax if they have a physical presence in the consumer's state.

Patrick administration officials have been in discussions with Amazon to charge residents sales tax, but talks have not yet produced any agreement.
