Winter emergency supply kit could come in hand

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - We haven't seen many snowflakes flying so far this season, but winter hasn't even officially started yet.

We've seen how destructive and debilitating winter storms can be. That's why the Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is reminding you to be prepared.

It's recommended you have a family emergency communication plan. That ensures if a family member is separated during the storm you have a plan to get back together.

Ask an out of state friend to be the family contact. In case of a disaster you can call that person. Calling outside of the area will probably be easier than calling into a disaster area.

Also, have a winter emergency supply kit. That should include flashlights, prescription medications, food and water.

As many know, our weather can change quickly. William Washburn of Agawam told 22News, “We're in New England and anything can happen. One day it can be 60 out and the next day it could be 23, so you've got to take it as it comes.”

MEMA also recommends you become familiar with your community's emergency plans.

These steps should help minimize stress and ensure safety during an emergency.
