BOSTON (WWLP) - People who take pride in our hometown soldiers can now show their support on their cars as veteran groups unveiled a veteran-themed license plate available at the Registry of Motor Vehicles .

The new license plate, introduced Monday, depicts a soldier kneeling before a flag that represents the three longest wars in the last hundred years of American history – those are the wars of Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.

The RMV currently offers military service-themed license plates limited to veterans only, but this license plate will be available for purchase to everyone in the state. The plates costs $79 for two years, and up to half of that money will go toward the New England Center for Homeless Veterans , Operation Troop Support , and Fisher House ; three organizations that assist veterans and their families.

Fisher House Board Member Tommy Lyons told 22News that the sales of the plate will be helpful in their efforts to provide for vets.

“This plate really, again, offers the opportunity for the average citizen to do something special to remember someone or to support three really good organizations,” he said.

Andy McCawley of the New England Center for Homeless Veterans said that they have a wide range of services.

“We provide a broad array of services to veterans, housing, clinical support, education, employment.”

The RMV will begin producing the license plates once they receive 3,000 pre-orders.
