Move designed to generate revenue

BOSTON (WWLP) - The next time that you go to the Registry of Motor Vehicles’ website, you may see something that you haven’t seen there before: advertising.

The RMV has launched a new website that allows the agency to collect revenue from advertisers for the first time. Now at MassRMV.com , the new site offers the same features as the previous .gov site, but with a feature that they estimate could raise $65,000 annually.

“MassRMV.com makes online transactions simpler for the customer, and gives us additional revenue opportunities,” MassDOT Secretary and CEO Richard Davey said.

The move to a .com address makes the RMV the first motor vehicle department website in the country to allow ads on its website. The advertisements will be located only on informational pages, and not on ones that include your personal information.

The state is working on a contract with an advertising vendor, and in the meantime, the website includes only promotional ads for RMV services.
