CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Soon it may cost you more to buy soda and candy. Governor Deval Patrick is proposing to add sales tax to those treats.

Right now all food items are exempt from the 6.25% sales tax, but if the budget proposal is approved, the lowered sales tax of 4.5% would be added to soda and candy.

Many parents like Tanya Martinez of Springfield told 22News they wouldn't mind the taxes at all. “My kids' health actually comes first. If they tax the soda and candies, it would help us prevent obesity and unhealthy lives for our children.”

Governor Patrick is also proposing to increase the cigarette tax by one dollar to $3.51 per pack.
