BREWSTER, Mass. (WWLP) - Rescuers are trying to help nine dolphins who were found stranded off the coast of Cape Cod Wednesday.
Michael Booth, spokesperson for the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) told 22News that the dolphins were found Tuesday near Sea Pines Drive in Brewster. All nine dolphins were found alive, and following their rescue they were loaded onto trucks for them to be tested.
Booth said that once the dolphins are determined to be healthy, they will be released back into the wild, which is expected to happen by the end of the day. They will be released into deeper waters near Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro.
Dolphin strandings have become a problem along Cape Cod Bay in recent weeks , with dozens having died in just a short amount of time. Different theories persist as to why so many dolphins are becoming stranded, from food resources to the dolphins’ social nature, which may cause them to follow a wayward fellow dolphin.
The nine dolphins that washed up Wednesday afternoon are from the same pod.
