No whoopie pies for welfare recipients, baker insists

BOSTON (AP) - A Massachusetts baker is refusing to sell her sweet treats to customers who want to pay with welfare benefits cards.

Andrea Taber sells whoopie pies at the Braintree Farmers Market , but is reconsidering her involvement after a dispute over the cards, which replaced food stamps.

In May, the farmer's market encouraged vendors to participate in a program allowing EBT card holders to purchase tokens to use at market stalls, but Taber resisted.

She told the Boston Herald she doesn't mind welfare recipients using the taxpayer funded cards to buy fruits and vegetables, but her sweets shouldn't be included in the program.

Organizers say they want welfare recipients to have access to healthy, fresh food.

The market will consider this fall whether to require vendors to accept EBT payments next year.
