BOSTON (WWLP) - Governor Deval Patrick has ordered flags around Massachusetts to be flown at half-staff in honor of those killed during the shooting at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

Governors across the nation have issued similar orders following the shooting rampage, which claimed the lives of 27 people, including 20 children.

The order applies to all state and municipal buildings, as well as all state military installations, though private property owners are also urged to follow suit.

The flag atop the White House was lowered just after 3:00 Friday afternoon.

The order remains in effect until sunset on Tuesday, December 18.
