Possibly dangerous algae found in Buzzards Bay

Bloom could kill fish in the bay

WAREHAM, Mass. (AP) - Environmentalists say they are concerned about the appearance of a rust-colored algae bloom in the northeastern part of Buzzards Bay that has the potential to kill marine life.

Known as cochlodinium , it is caused by nitrogen pollution and has the potential to grow so thick that it can clog gills, suffocating fish.

Rachel Jakuba, vice president of advocacy for the Buzzards Bay Coalition, tells The Standard-Times the good news is that it hasn't caused any fish kills in local waters yet.

The rust tide first appeared this year at the end of July in two areas off Wareham.

Septic systems, along with runoff from cranberry bogs and rain, are the largest contributors to nitrogen pollution in the area.

She says it's important that towns address the problem.
