WELLFLEET, Mass. (AP) - The presence of a bird rarely seen on the East Coast at a Cape Cod wildlife sanctuary has set off an ornithological frenzy.
Mark Faherty, science coordinator at the Massachusetts Audubon Society's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, says it's been "pandemonium" since the lazuli bunting was first spotted several days ago.
He tells the Cape Cod Times 25 people were lined up waiting for the sanctuary to open Sunday.
Experts say this is the first documented sighting of a lazuli bunting on Cape Cod and only the third time one has been seen in Massachusetts.
They are normally only seen out west.
The Cape Cod bird appears to be young, because it doesn't yet have the brilliant blue head feathers, reddish breast and bright white wing stripes of an adult.
