What happens if Kerry goes to Washington?

An interim senator would be appointed

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Should President Obama select Senator John Kerry as a member of his Cabinet, another senate seat here in Massachusetts would prematurely be up for grabs.

If Kerry does go to Washington, Governor Patrick would appoint an interim senator who would serve for 145-160 days. Then a special election would be held, so voters would pick the Senator going forward.

Chairman of the state's Democratic Committee John Walsh told 22news the type of candidate who would fit the role. “Someone who really understands the people of Massachusetts has had some kind of experience that shows leadership.”

Walsh told 22news that although Richard Neal is needed in his strong leadership role in the House of Representatives, his is the kind of experience needed for a candidate.
