BOSTON (AP) - A union official says General Motors Corp.'s plan to close its
service and parts warehousing and distribution center in
Massachusetts will leave about 66 union workers jobless.
Al Lamoureux of the United Auto Workers of America Local 422
said Monday that GM plans to transfer the work to its Philadelphia
operation by the end of the year.
The center in Norton, west of Boston, serves GM dealers in
New England and parts of New York state.
Lamoureux said Massachusetts workers affected include 57
union members on the payroll, nine on layoffs and about 14 salaried
workers.
He said it's not immediately clear if workers will have the
option to follow their jobs to the new location.
Union leaders plan to lobby members of Congress to press the
federal government to keep the Massachusetts operation open.
