Fire hazard grows

Especially in Hilltowns hit by ice storm

This season’s fire threat will be elevated in certain communities as a result of severe winter weather.

Hilltowns ravaged by a December 2008 ice storm were left with masses of tangled branches and broken tree limbs. Although road crews have left no evidence along local streets, forest floors are piled high with the aftermath.

Dried branches and brush could increase the risk of forest fires in areas where trees were seriously damaged six moths ago.

Camping season, barbecues, and summertime thunderstorms are potential triggers of forest fires.

Huntington Assistant Fire Chief Chip Dazelle gave 22News tips to help homeowners safe this summer. He advised:

  • Keep branches and dried debris far away from your house. A minimum of 100 feet is recommended.
  • Contact the local utility company to remove hanging branches near power lines.
  • Watch campfires and barbecues closely.   One can play it safe by keeping a garden hose on hand.

Burning brush after May 1 is not permitted in the state of Massachusetts. Towns and cities will not grant burning permits.
