NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) - While many industries are cutting jobs, the health care industry is seeing growth here in Connecticut.

Erin Floridia is in a Master's program at Quinnipiac University in Hamden. She is studying to be a physician assistant and is excited about landing her first job.

"I'm excited to go into the work force into a job I enjoy," Floridia said.

Not many college students can say that. In Connecticut last year 4,100 healthcare jobs were added.  One of the main reasons is because so many baby boomers are reaching the age where they need intensive care.

"Baby boomers are not only getting older but they're also entering retirement," said Cynthia Christie, Assistant Dean of Career Services at Quinnipiac.

Christie says for students in the healthcare field, it'a a matter of picking the right job not just finding a job.

"Health care is one of the only industries that is recession proof," Christie said.

Erin Floridia is on track to have her Masters in another year at the age of 28. She could land a job as a physician assistant making $80,000 a year to start.

"It's a nice feeling to know there's opportunity and job security," Floridia said.

In an economy where most job seekers have high blood pressure, Floridia seems to be as calm as any health care professional should be in a time of crisis.
