ALBANY, N.Y. (WNYT) - The New York State Senate has approved what supporters say will be the toughest gun laws in the nation.
The Assembly is expected to follow suit, and then Governor Andrew Cuomo will sign the bill into law.
If enacted, the law aims to keep guns out of the hands of mental health patients, it will ban high capacity magazines and assault weapons, it requires universal background checks on all gun purchases or gun transfers.
There will be tougher penalties for gun crimes, including the Webster Provision, requiring life-in-prison-without-parole for killing first responders.
