(1923 – 2009) - Emily E. (Latif) Metivier, 86, of the Arbors in Westfield and a
longtime resident of Piedmont Street in the Hungry Hill section of
Springfield died on Wednesday November 11, 2009 at the Westfield
Care and Rehab Center in Westfield surrounded by her loving family.
Emily was born in Fitchburg, MA on August 27, 1923 a daughter
of the late Kalil and Mary (Absee) Latif. She was employed for 20
years as a cafeteria cashier at the High School of Commerce and
later at Van Sickle Junior High School, both in Springfield. Emily
was a communicant of Our Lady of Hope Church in Springfield. She
loved to cook, but her number one priority was her family. Emily
enjoyed crossword puzzles and was known by many as the
“Crossword Puzzle Queen”. She will be deeply missed by
all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents, Emily was predeceased by her
husband, Richard I. Metivier who died on December 27, 1998; a
granddaughter, Nicole Flanagan-Ayers who died on July 2, 2006 and a
sister, Alice Goodreau. Emily is survived by her son, Richard A.
Metivier and his wife Diane of Westfield; her daughter, Carol A.
Flanagan and her husband John of Middletown, RI; her grandchildren,
Tara Flanagan-Koenig and her husband Bill of Virginia and Eric J.
Metivier of Cocoa Beach, FL; her great grandchildren, Jacqueline,
Liam and Maggie Ayers and Nevaeh Wilson; her brothers, Joseph Latif
and his wife Marion of Springfield and Robert Latif of Chicopee;
her faithful and loving sister, Gloria Garvey of Agawam; and her
many extended family members and friends. Emily’s family
would like to extend their deepest thanks to the staff of the
Arbors and the Westfield Care and Rehab Center for their wonderful
care of Emily.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday November 15, 2009 from
2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Sampson’s Funeral Home, 710 Liberty
Street in Springfield. Funeral services will be held on Monday
November 16, 2009 beginning at 9 a.m. at Sampson’s followed
by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Hope Church
at the corner of Armory and Carew Streets, both in Springfield with
Rites of Committal to follow in St. Patrick’s Church on
Fuller Road in Chicopee. Donations may be made in Emily’s
memory to the Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 516 Carew
Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
