(WWLP) - Congressman Ed Markey announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate on Saturday, with stops across the state including one in Springfield.

What many don’t realize is that this is Markey’s second run for the Senate.   It comes 29 years after his first run for it in 1984.

In 1984, Markey announced that he was running for the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Paul Tsongas.  Markey, later dropped out of the race, which Senator John Kerry won.

Now Markey, a Democrat, is running for the seat that Kerry, has vacated by moving up to Secretary of State.
