BOSTON (WWLP) - Republicans in the Massachusetts House of Representatives are calling for the resignation of the state's Health and Human Services Secretary.

The GOP lawmakers are demanding the immediate removal of Secretary JudyAnn Bigby in light of the recent scandals plaguing the Executive Office of Health and Human Services .

Republicans say they're disappointed with Bigby's response to the meningitis outbreak that has killed 36 people, and the state drug lab scandal that has led to the release of nearly 200 inmates.

In a letter to Governor Deval Patrick, Republicans said both these cases raise serious questions about leadership in the state's Health and Human Services agency. They added that Bigby's response to public hearings at the State House on these events have been inadequate.

“The time has come, particularly in light of testimony yesterday that was uninspiring, lacking; I would say less-than-forthcoming,” said House Minority Leader Brad Jones (R-North Reading).

“I would ask her to step down and do the right thing for the people of the Commonwealth,” said Rep. Elizabeth Poirier (R-North Attleborough).

A spokesperson for Secretary Bigby avoided answering whether she would step down.  In a statement, Bigby's office said she will continue to take actions necessary to restore confidence in the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
