BOSTON (WWLP) - A national group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns and U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren are launching a three-pronged attack to combat gun violence across the country.

Leading the group of mayors is Boston Mayor Tom Menino, who spoke with Senator Warren about a gun safety strategy. Warren plans to support legislation that requires every gun-buyer to go through a criminal background check, bans military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and makes gun trafficking a federal crime.

The freshman Senator says the country has lost more than 6,000 children to gun violence in the last two years.

“We are losing our children to a deadly scourge of gun violence, and we need to bring the same kind of intensity to protecting our children,” said Warren.

The Democrat said that the National Rifle Association is a roadblock to “sensible” gun reform.

Western Massachusetts mayors who have joined the Mayors Against Illegal Guns group are Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno, Northampton Mayor David Narkewicz and Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse.
