Governor seeks `transformative' senator

Wouldn't comment on possible appointees

RICHMOND, Mass. (AP) - Gov. Deval Patrick says the temporary senator he would choose to replace the late Sen. Edward Kennedy must watch out for Massachusetts's parochial interests in Washington and stand up on the "transformative issues" about health care reform and the economy.

The Democrat says he has seen lists of names of possible appointees but he won't comment. He says he hopes the Legislature quickly gives him the power to make a temporary appointment while a special election campaign is under way.

Kennedy died of brain cancer on Aug. 25.

The governor spoke at a news conference after meeting with his Cabinet at a school near his Berkshire Mountains vacation home. Patrick has been out of the Statehouse since having hip replacement surgery on Sept. 1.

During the meeting, a single crutch lay on the floor beneath his seat.
