(WWLP) - If you plan on hiking or hunting in the next two weeks, here are tips on how to stay safe.

Mass Wildlife says many hunting accidents happen when the victim is not wearing enough blaze orange.

If you plan on being in the woods during hunting season, wearing blaze orange is your first line of defense. Avoid wearing white during this time of year as it could be mistaken for the white of a deer's tail.

Also, don't forget your pets. Blaze orange collars are available in stores.

Massachusetts is the third most densely populated state in the country when it comes to deer, especially in the northwestern part of the state. So considering hiking in areas that are not popular for hunters is another way to stay safe.

Last January a hunter in Norton shot a woman after mistaking her for a deer.
