CALUMETVILLE, Wis. (WLUK) - A construction crew in northern Fond du Lac county got the surprise, perhaps of a lifetime, as workers uncovered human remains Monday night. Archaeologists say the bones could be nearly 800 years old.
The bones were found on Highway 151 in Calumetville just north of County Highway HHH.
Construction has been postponed until the State Historical Society can get a better look at the bones.
An initial excavation shows the remains may be that of a Native American woman from about the year 1250. Archaeologists believe the site could be a burial ground. They will continue digging for other bones.
Residents are intrigued by the findings.
"I found out about that today," said Steve Stephany of Calumetville. "That's why I want to take a little walk and see what's happening, cause I'm very curious. It's cool."
"Well there's Indian remains all around here," said Dan Breissner of Calumetville. "But I didn't think this was going on with the project and all for that, so this is sort of a unique situation I guess."
The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department has an officer guarding the bones in case anyone had any ideas about disrupting the discovery.
